Groundhog Day 2011

The largest winter storm in years has just left its mark on certain parts of the US but that hasn’t stopped Punxsutawney Phil (the world’s most popular groundhog) from making his annual prediction.
So Did Punxsutawney Phil See His Shadow This Morning?
The answer is no, which means that spring is on its way early this year!
Traditions show that if the famous groundhog sees his shadow, we will face at least six more weeks of winter, if he doesn’t see his shadow – which happened this morning – spring will be rolling in before we know it.
A little bit of good news during the unfortunate weather circumstances this year.
It was also just announced that Canada’s most famous groundhog, Wiarton Willie did not see his shadow either.

Suffolk County’s celebrity groundhog – Holtsville Hal – has predicted a long winter.
Hal saw his shadow at 7:25 a.m., contradicting predictions of an early spring made by New York City’s Staten Island Chuck and the nation’s foremost groundhog – Punxsutawney Phil Pennsylvania – who started the 125-year-old tradition.
In Nassau County, Malverne Mel did not weigh in this year after village officials cancelled the 15th annual event due to an ice storm hitting the area Wednesday. He will make a brief appearace at village hall at 9 a.m. instead.
Tradition holds that if the groundhog sees its shadow, winter could last six more weeks.
Hal’s prediction is not really a surprise. There is a 50 percent chance of snow this weekend, following a record-breaking amount of snowfall for the month of January in an unusually snowy winter season so far.
