Just days ago, Tom Cruise was as exuberant as ever about his love for Katie Holmes, telling PEOPLE that his perfect day is “the time with Kate.”
Sadly, those days appear to be over.
On Thursday, five days before Cruise’s 50th birthday, Holmes (33) filed divorce papers in New York, leaving Cruise “deeply saddened” – and their fans searching for answers.
Although the couple have faced breakup rumors ever since their whirlwind romance led to an engagement, baby and then marriage, the timing and circumstances of the breakup still came as a shock – and raised the question of whether the actor was taken by surprise.
Cruise confirmed that it was Holmes who filed papers (not him) and the brief statement from his rep spoke of the star needing privacy to “work this out.”

After five years of marriage, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have split.
Tom Cruise’s lawyer Bert Fields said Katie Holmes had filed for divorce on Thursday.
“This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family” – Holmes’s attorney Jonathan Wolfe said.
“Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”
A representative for Tom Cruise said he was deeply saddened by the divorce, calling for privacy for him to concentrate on his three children.
The high-profile couple and members of the Church of Scientology have one daughter, Suri, who is six year’s old.
Tom Cruise has two adopted children with his second wife, Nicole Kidman – Isabella Jane (19) and Connor Antony (17).
Tom Cruise’s first marriage was to actress Mimi Rogers in 1987. They divorced in 1990.
This was the first marriage for Holmes, whose career was launched with the hit teenage TV show, Dawson’s Creek.
One of the greatest hallmark’s of the couple’s relationship was Cruise’s declaration of love to Holmes, whilst jumping up and down on the couch of The Oprah Winfrey Show.

The couple have a 6-year-old daughter – Suri. “Kate has filed for divorce, and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children” – Cruise’s spokeswoman, Amanda Lundberg, said in a statement to Newsday. “Please allow them their privacy to work this out.”
Holmes (33) filed a divorce petition anonymously in Manhattan on Thursday, TMZ.com reported, and has asked for sole legal custody of their daughter.
The three-time Oscar-nominee Cruise, who currently stars in the film musical “Rock of Ages,” and former “Dawson’s Creek” star Holmes were married November 17, 2006, in Los Angeles but had a lavish wedding ceremony at a 15th-century castle in Bracciano, Italy, the next day.
Cruise, who turns 50 on Tuesday, was married to actress Mimi Rogers from 1987 to 1990. While filming the 1990 movie “Days of Thunder,” Cruise became close with co-star Nicole Kidman, and the two wed on Christmas Eve 1990.
Cruise and Kidman adopted infant Isabella Jane in January 1993 and 2-week-old Connor Antony in February 1995. The couple divorced in 2001.
This was Holmes’ first marriage.
