MTV Movie Awards 2011

Hollywood, CA, 06.05.11 – The show started badly with host Jason Sudeikis opening the 2011 MTV Movie Awards with a monologue featuring five Arnold Schwarzenegger jokes that would not have made the writer’s cut on Letterman, much less Leno.
The show had its racy moments – even by MTV standards, whose are rather loose on its award shows when it’s looking for shock, controversy and ratings. Justin Timberlake grabbed Mila Kunis’ breasts while she held on tightly to his penis.
Timberlake, known to push the limits on TV – think wardrobe malfunction at the Super Bowl and the SNL hit Dick in a Box – met his match as Rob Pattinson was on prowl.
Pattinson (who won the Best Kiss award for his smooch with Kristen Stewart) instead kissed Twilight co-star Taylor Lautner. He later told ‘Water for Elephants’ co-star Reese Witherspoon “But I did fuck you,” and too quickly to be bleeped by censors. Even live shows have a three-second delay, so the censors can hit the button, so it’s a curiosity why this language malfunction was left in. Oh, MTV, we just love your fake daring.
Yet Pattinson was in rare form and plowed on. He suggested Witherspoon had trouble speaking while in a girdle, has a penchant for tequila and that she may or may not be “33 percent lesbian,” as an embarrassed Witherspoon hid her face and laughed from her seat. Pattinson concluded his remarks by saying: “It’s not always a bad thing to have sexual chemistry with your mother,” once again referencing his unseen part in ‘Vanity Fair.’

MTV Movie Awards 2011
Robert Pattinson.

For his role as vampire Edward Cullen in ‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,’ Pattinson won best male performance, best fight with Bryce Dallas Howard and Xavier Samuel, and best kiss with Kristen Stewart. Instead of smooching each other, Pattinson declared he didn’t ”feel like kissing” Stewart before he descended back into the audience and planted his lips on Lautner.
Team Jacob also earned some love from ‘Saturday Night Live’ star Jason Sudeikis, the show’s host, who kicked off the silly ceremony at the Gibson Amphitheater by starring in his own version of ‘The Hangover’ in which he went in search of a lost Lautner. The other ‘Twilight’ winners were Stewart for best female performance and ‘Eclipse’ for best movie.
”Natalie, sorry, but the popcorn is mine” – Stewart said mockingly, referencing fellow nominee Natalie Portman, who won the best actress Oscar earlier this year for ‘Black Swan.’
It was the third straight year that ‘Twilight’ eclipsed the competition with the most wins at the fan-favorite ceremony. Last year, ‘New Moon,’ the second installment of the ‘Twilight’ film franchise, also earned awards for best movie, best kiss, best female performance and best male performance.
”The fact that we’re standing up here is a testament to all the hard work that went into ‘Eclipse’” – Lautner said.
The non-vampire winners who picked up awards Sunday included Emma Stone for best comedic performance for ‘Easy A,’ Justin Bieber for best jaw dropping moment for ‘Justin Bieber: Never Say Never,’ Alexys Nycole Sanchez for best line for ‘Grown Ups,’ and Tom Felton for best villain for ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.’

The Fashions. Some of the best action at any event is beforehand, so I arrived a few minutes early to do a cursory walk through the lobby of the Gibson to get a flavor of the crowd at the MTV Movie Awards. The fashion was the most startling. There was the high end stuff, like the pretty-pretty Pretty Little Liars star Ashley Benson in a cute, short, flirty dress. And the sensible, like the demure (but appropriate) frock Friday Night Lights‘ star Aimee Teegarden was wearing. But mostly – The people at the show were wearing the craziest of outfits, highlighted by the trashiest, shortest skirts on the planet; dresses that looked to be from the Real Housewives collection; the guy behind me in the theater who was wearing a sparky suit with a cheetah-print hankerchief in the pocket; at least one fur coat (in L.A.?!? in June?!?); the guy in front of me who was wearing multiple rhinestone-encrusted skulls around his neck; and just generally the idea of glitter. Anyway, it was really a bunch of winners in the theater there last night.
The Stage. I’m sure it came off well on screen, but live, in person, the stage was particularly delightful. Host Jason Sudeikis kept making fun of it, but really, it came off as something like a spectacular, icicle spider web… in a forest? Maybe? Anyway, it really seemed to embody youth and MTV. Bravo.
The Trivia. Before the show began, the audience was treated to trivia on the screens to pass the time. Who was the actor to play the lead in the new Karate Kid? (Jaden Smith.) What group performed “It’s Gonna Be Me” at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards? (‘NSYNC.) What movie did Gnarls Barkley pull inspiration from for their performance at the 2006 MTV Movie Awards? (Star Wars.) Kinda fun to pass the time, but not exactly mind-bending, as you can tell.
