Delonte West talk in Twitter
Though the alleged run with Home Depot didn’t go as planned, former Cavaliers guard Delonte West has found himself some gainful, stateside employment as a stock boy for Regency Furniture.
The DC-based furniture store will provide West with some time-killing, money-making opportunities (allowing the veteran shooting guard to ‘stay afloat durin the lockout’) thanks to his willingnes to work full-time as well as on weekends. The fact that he’s a local NBA player may have also played a part given the entire top half of his application was not completed.
However, the piece de resistance of the entire application, which was tweeted out late Wednesday evening and can be seen to the right, were West’s reasoning for being convicted of a crime, a ‘Misunderstanding,’ and his first day of availabilty, ‘Yesterday.’
How can you not miss this guy?
Delonte West.
During the NBA lockout, a few players have looked for career opportunities off the court – including former Cleveland Cavalier Delonte West.
The shooting guard posted on his Twitter account ( @CharleeRedz13 ) on Wednesday that he applied for a job at Regency Furniture in Washington D.C. On Thursday, he posted pictures of him at his new job.
While several pictures are of West and his new coworkers, he also posted a photo of his application (http://5.wews.com/Fc0 ). He wrote that he is willing to work weekends and heard about the job through ‘word of mouth.’ He scribbled ‘yesterday’ in response to when he could start working.
The highlight of application is where West checked yes to the question ‘Have you ever been convicted of a crime?’ When asked to describe the incident in full, West wrote ‘misunderstanding.’
West (who most recently played for the Boston Celtics) is no stranger to controversy. In August 2010, he was suspended for 10 games and sentenced to eight months home detention for carrying two handguns and a shotgun while speeding on a three-wheel motorcycle in D.C.
West had recently said on the popular social networking site that he was going to apply for a job at Home Depot, but it appears he is still doing some heavy lifting.
In case the All-Star front court players appearing on episodes of ‘Law & Order: SVU’ hasn’t clued you in, the NBA is still in a lockout. According to Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski, commissioner David Stern is aiming to strike a deal with the players’ union this weekend.
But just in case that doesn’t work out, there is one player who seems to be very motivated to find honest work outside of basketball… Delonte West.
The free agent guard tweeted Wednesday evening that he has applied for a job at Regency Furniture.
“Applied at Regency Furniture, need a 2nd job to stay afloat during the lockout” – he wrote, including a picture of his application.
An hour later, the 28-year-old tweeted that he is officially an employee of the company and attached this photo.
While the lockout has prohibited West from re-signing with the Boston Celtics or signing a contract with a new NBA employer, he has been quite open about his job search, previously tweeting about applying to work for Home Depot back in August. Around that time, West also revealed that he could not play basketball overseas due to his legal troubles.
Now, we have to give it up for the seven-year veteran out of Saint Joseph’s. West, who suffers from bi-polar disorder, is actively looking for a paying gig during the work stoppage and apparently already has two jobs. Although West has previously been embroiled in his share of off-the-court trouble, he certainly seems to be working hard to overcome some of the same economic obstacles as the rest of us.
The same thing cannot be said for some other players who have made headlines for the wrong reasons over the last few months. Earlier in the summer, Timberwolves forward Michael Beasley was cited for marijuana possession and speeding. Even when he tried to work on his game by playing in an exhibition, he ended up losing his cool and shoving a fan in the face.
Other players like Marcus Camby and Ben Wallace have also spent their downtime getting in trouble with the law.
While West’s significant legal missteps, blue-collar job endeavors and alleged romantic dalliances make him an easy target for some, it’s awfully hard to disparage the earnest way that he faces all the struggles in his life – financial and otherwise.
