Film critic refuses to apologise for drink drive comments made on Twitter following the death of Jackass star Ryan Dunn in a car accident.
The eminent US film critic Roger Ebert has refused to apologise for anti drink drive comments made on Twitter following the death of Jackass star Ryan Dunn on Monday.
Dunn and another passenger died when the car they were travelling in (Dunn’s Porsche 911) hit a tree and burst into flames in West Goshen, Pennsylvania. The 34-year-old, who was driving the vehicle, had appeared in all three Jackass films, along with three seasons of the MTV TV show which spawned them.
A few hours before the accident, Dunn had tweeted pictures of himself drinking with friends to his followers.
Ebert later commented – “Friends don’t let Jackasses drink and drive” via Twitter, spawning an immediate backlash from some of his followers. The celebrity blogger Perez Hilton was one of the first to suggest that the film critic’s comments may have been made too soon after Dunn’s death, but Ebert later tweeted in response – “Perez Hilton’s readers agree with me and not with Perez about my tweet on Ryan Dunn. He drank, he drove, 2 people died.”
Dunn was identified by his tattoos, according to a witness who was on the scene when the bodies were pulled from the wreckage. The mother of Dunn’s Jackass co-star Bam Margera reportedly called a local radio station to confirm that he was killed in a car accident.
Dunn’s Jackass costar Johnny Knoxville tweeted – “Today I lost my brother Ryan Dunn. My heart goes out to his family and his beloved Angie. RIP Ryan, I love you buddy.”
A preliminary police report from the West Goshen police department cited speed as a possible contributory factor in the deaths of Dunn and his friend, but did not mention alcohol.

While MTV and ‘Jackass’ crew was paying tribute to their crew member Ryan Dunn, legendary film critic Roger Ebert slammed Dunn for his drunken driving that may have caused the tragic death of Dunn.
Dunn passed away early Monday due to injuries sustained in a fatal car crash in Pennsylvania.
During the crash, Dunn’s 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 went off a road, crashed in to woods and caught fire. According to police, the accident occurred at 3 a.m. on Route 322 and New Street in West Goshen Township.
A 30-year old passenger (who was later identified as Zachary Hartwell of West Chester) also died in the accident. Hartwell was working as a production assistant on the movie ‘Jackass Number Two’.
Dunn, who was identified after the crash through his tattoos and facial hair, posted a photo on Twitter hours before his death in which he was drinking with his friends in a bar, TMZ reported.
This report fueled speculation that the terrific accident was due to Dunn being drunk.
Ebert, who is the first film critic to win a Pulitzer Prize for Criticism, tweeted “Friends don’t let Jackasses drink and drive.”
The tweet irked a controversy among Dunn’s friends, fans and well-wishers, saying Ebert has no right to speak bad about a person who has died just hours before.
Dunn’s long-time friend Bam Margera blasted Eger through the same mode – Twitter. Margera tweeted – “About a jackass drunk driving and his is one, f**k you! Millions of people are crying right now, shut your fat f**king mouth!”
He further tweeted – “I just lost my best friend, I have been crying hysterical for a full day and piece of s**t roger ebert has the gall to put in his 2 cents”.

Taking to his Twitter account, Bam blasted the 69-year-old journalist, writing: “I just lost my best friend, I have been crying hysterical for a full day and piece of s*** roger ebert has the gall to put in his 2 cents about a jackass drunk driving and his is one, f*** you!” He added, “Millions of people are crying right now, shut your fat f***ing mouth!”
TMZ has reported that before the terrible accident happened, Ryan was spotted drinking at least 3 beers and 3 shots at a Philly-area bar. Shortly after Ryan’s was announced dead as his Porsche got crashed off Pennsylvania highway, Roger tweeted: ” ‘Jackass’ star Ryan Dunn, RIP. His Porsche flew through 40 yards of trees.” He then added it with an impulsive comment that read: “Friends don’t let jackasses drink and drive.”
