From the moment he first stepped in front of the judges and unleashed a folksy take on Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” guitar-playing crooner Phillip Phillips seemed preordained to win “American Idol,” and not just because he’s another white guy with a guitar, the all-too-familiar profile of the previous four “Idol” champions.
“I’m just lucky” – the former pawn shop worker said Wednesday night in his backstage dressing room after his win.
It was more than just luck that helped Phillips easily overcome 16-year-old mini-diva Jessica Sanchez to become the Fox talent competition’s 11th season victor. The combination of his goofy personality, ah-shucks Southern humility, rebelliousness, risk-taking originality and, yes, those good looks kept him at the front of the pack all season long.
While he is indeed a WGWG (the “Idol” fan term for “white guys with guitars”) Phillips differentiated himself with a musical style that was grittier than past winners David Cook, Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze and Scotty McCreery, as well his competitors with much wider vocal ranges, like gospel singer Joshua Ledet and soaring vocalist Hollie Cavanagh.
Mostly, Phillips was just so darn charming. When given the opportunity, he always excelled at genuinely letting his personality shine through on the show, often as much of a challenge as hitting the right notes. He established a silly bromance with finalist Heejun Han and seemed downright distraught at the unexpected dismissal of alt-rocker Colten Dixon.
Despite Sanchez’s unstoppable voice and a savvy-beyond-her-years approach, she was essentially living on borrowed time after she was supposed to be eliminated but was saved by the judges. She realized that during Top Three week.
“I told Phillip, ‘You’re gonna win this whole thing,’ and he was like, ‘Nah, I’m not’” – recalled Sanchez backstage. “I’m like, ‘Yes, you are.’ I don’t think he totally believed that, and I totally believed it. I just went out in this competition after that moment and just sang. Phillip’s gonna win, anyway. I might as well just sing my heart out.”

Green Bay Packers star receiver Donald Driver (37) cemented his status as a legend on the dance floor as well as the football field Tuesday night, as he took home the coveted mirror ball trophy on the season finale of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars.
Driver, who fought hard all season to land a 10 score from tough judge Len Goodman, finally earned it Monday night during his country-themed freestyle dance. And he and pro partner Peta Murgatroyd repeated the feat Tuesday with his shirt-free cha-cha, earning a perfect 30 from the judges and a total of 89 for the two nights.
“We’ve had some great footballers on the show over the years” – said Goodman. “My feeling is, you are the best we’ve had.”
Driver defeated Welsh opera star Katherine Jenkins, who was runner-up, and Latin actor and model William Levy to become the third football star (after Emmitt Smith and Hines Ward) to win on DWTS. “This has been the most competitive season ever” – said Levy’s pro partner, Cheryl Burke. “The top six of this show could easily have won any other season.”
“I would have to say it was a miracle” – Driver said afterward. “We did what we had to do on the floor, and we knew we had to leave it up to the judges and the fans. The fans made the decision, and the fans loved our freestyle last night. I think the freestyle put us on top, and after that, there was no looking back.”

The Newark mayor’s real blunder wasn’t criticizing Obama’s campaign ads. It was giving Mitt Romney a pass.
Cory Booker is a famous man of action. The mayor of Newark shovels walkways in heavy snowstorms. Recently, he rushed into a burning building to save a woman. Sunday night he was at it again, this time working fast to remove his foot from his mouth. On Sunday morning’s Meet the Press, Booker described President Obama’s recent campaigns ads attacking Mitt Romney as “nauseating,” comparing them to the foiled 10 million dollars plan to remind voters that Obama was a longtime parishioner of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Booker, who is considered a possible presidential prospect some day, had spent most of the show boasting about Obama’s achievements. But when you undermine the central thrust of the president’s attack strategy you must repair. By the end of the day, Booker had released a four-minute video trying to explain his comments.
Mayor Booker was wrong on both counts. Bain is fair game, and there’s no equivalence between the Obama campaign going after Romney’s record at Bain and the proposed super-PAC-funded attack ads attempting to link Obama to his controversial former pastor.
Booker’s complaint was that the Obama campaign’s ads distracted from the important issues facing voters and that its tone would sour people on the election. In general, it’s a reasonable complaint. There’s plenty in Obama’s campaign that saps voters’ hopes and distracts from core issues. But Booker picked the wrong target. Mitt Romney has argued repeatedly that his career at Bain—more so than almost anything else—gives him special insight into how to turn around the U.S. economy. It’s well within bounds to put that career under a microscope to assess the truth of his claims.

Adele was the big winner at last night’s Billboard Music Awards (20th May), taking home twelve major gongs at the ceremony, including Top Artist and Top Billboard 200 Album for 21.
LMFAO were also one of the night’s top winners, taking home six awards: with Party Rock Anthem picking up the prize for Hot 100 Song Of The Year, with Red Foo stating – “This is a dream come true,” Lil Wayne and Coldplay also received multiple trophies with four wins each, while Lady GaGa bagged two gongs – including Top Dance Artist.
If there was an award for Most Swagger then Justin Bieber would have been victorious after a clown-and-geisha-assisted future-funk performance of Boyfriend, with the 18-year old also taking home the night’s first gong for Top Social Artist award for his huge online presence.
JB swaggered up to the stage and, in an uncharacteristically emotional moment, said – “I just want to say how much of a blessing it’s been … the past three or four years, growing up in front of everybody.
“I want to thank all my fans, because the Internet is where I got my start, and all my fans have helped me get to this position.”

A day after his company went public, founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg updated his Facebook status to “married.” Zuckerberg wed 27-year-old Priscilla Chan (his girlfriend of nearly a decade) in a surprise ceremony in Palo Alto.
The couple married at Zuckerberg’s California home in front of fewer than 100 stunned guests who thought they would be attending a party to celebrate Chan’s graduation from medical school.
Zuckerberg gave his new bride a ring he had designed with a “very simple ruby” to end an incredibly eventful week, according to a guest authorized to speak for the couple.
On Monday, Zuckerberg turned 28 and Chan graduated from the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine, where she studied pediatrics.
The seemingly well-coordinated timing was largely a coincidence – the guest said. The wedding had been planned for months and the couple was waiting for Chan to finish medical school, but the date of the IPO was a “moving target” not known when the wedding was set.
Attendees, including Facebook’s chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, were told after they arrived that they were not mere party guests, but actually wedding guests.

Donna Summer, the singer who came to be known as the “Queen of Disco” during her 1970′s heyday, died at her Naples, Fla. home today after battling lung cancer. She was 63.
“Early this morning, surrounded by family, we lost Donna Summer Sudano, a woman of many gifts, the greatest being her faith” – her family said in a statement. “While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy. Words truly can’t express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time.”
A source to close to the family said Summer was suffering from lung cancer.
Summer was a five time Grammy award winner who was the first artist to have three consecutive double albums reach No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard chart. Her hits like “Last Dance,” “Bad Girls,” and “Love to Love You Baby” made her a disco icon.
Born outside of Boston, Summer was raised by devout Christian parents who introduced her to both gospel and classical music. In a 2008 interview with ABC News’ “Nightline,” Summer remembered her mom singing songs to her before going to bed each night.
“As long as the classical station was playing on the radio, I wouldn’t cry” – she said. “If it was on for 20 hours, I would sleep for 20 hours. I would be calm. So I think that my mother probably helped my sense of musicality just by doing that.”

Necrotizing fasciitis or flesh eating bacteria victim (Aimee Copeland) is set to breathe on her own as her condition improves. But she may still lose more parts of her body
Just less than a fortnight ago, she was one of very healthy, young women with stars in her eyes looking to begin her career after completion of her education. She was a scholar at a leading university and no one would have thought that her life will take a turn for worse so suddenly.
The 24 year old girl got infected with Aeromonas hydrophila on the first day of this month and so far has lost her left leg besides some parts of her stomach. There are still fears that the girl may lose more limbs and other parts of her body as doctors seek to save her life. Though, she has been on ventilator for much of this past fortnight, seeing certain improvements in her condition, doctors are hopeful that in coming few days she would be able to breathe on her own.
Her ordeal began on May 1st when she got a huge cut after she fell from a homemade zip line. At that time, no one thought that the wound may turn out to be so much life threatening. It was after days of treatment it became clear she was infected with flesh-eating disease.
Her father Andy Copeland, who has shown remarkable self control despite seeing his daughter lose her foot and other body-parts says: “I couldn’t conceive of what it would be like for my daughter to lose her hands and the only other foot she has, as well, and that appears to be what is going to happen… The most important thing is my daughter is still alive.”

Chris “Birdman” Anderson will not be suiting up for the rest of the playoffs, or anytime soon for that matter. The Denver Nuggets excused him indefinitely from all team activities after Douglas County sheriff deputies entered and searched his home on Thursday afternoon before Denver’s game six first round match up against the Lakers.
While details have yet to be released, all that is known so far is that the people searching his home are in an investigation related to an Internet Crimes Against Children unit.
P. Solomon Banda of the Associated Press released the following:
“Sheriff’s spokesman Ron Hanavan confirmed that the search took place Thursday. Andersen has not been arrested and Hanavan said no arrest warrant has been issued.
The department began investigating Andersen in February after receiving information from a law enforcement agency in California. Hanavan declined to release details, including the nature of any pending charges, citing an ongoing investigation. He said they’re asking that the case be sealed.
Andersen answered the door at his Larkspur, Colo., home, about 40 miles south of Denver, and let deputies in, said Deborah Sherman, another sheriff’s spokesperson. ‘He did cooperate. He spoke with deputies’ – Sherman said.
The unit investigating Andersen investigates child porn, Internet luring, child predators and child pornography.”
