Pierre de Fermat’s 410th birthday

Fermat’s Last Theorem was the best known work of Pierre de Fermat, a 17th Century French lawyer and an amateur mathematician who is given credit for early developments that led to infinitesimal calculus.
His 410th birthday is marked today with a Google doodle, partially, illustrating his theory with the principal equation written in chalk on a blackboard with a partially erased Google logo.
There is also an appropriation of his famous words and notes in the alt text of the Google doodle that reads: “I have discovered a truly marvelous proof of this theorem, which this doodle is too small to contain.”
Believed to have studied law Toulouse and Bordeaux, Pierre de Fermat was born on August 17 (1601) and died January 12 (1665).
Described in a note at the margin of a copy of Diophantus’ Arithmetica in 1637, Fermat’s Last Theorem states that no three positive integers a, b, and c can satisfy the equation ‘an + bn = cn’ for any integer value of n greater than two, as long as a, b, and c are not equal.
Fermat famously claimed that he could prove the hypothesis but that it was too large to fit in the margin – an approach that enterprising pupils have claimed in maths lessons ever since.

Kate Gosselin about TLC cancels Kate Plus 8

It looks like mother of eight Kate Gosselin, 36, may soon be seeing a sudden drop in her finances.
U.S. network TLC today announced that it has wielded the axe on the reality show which follows the up and downs of her life with her sextuplet and twin brood.
The network said in a statement: “TLC has decided not to renew another season of Kate Plus 8.
“By the end of this season Kate Plus 8 will have hit the 150 episode mark (including Jon & Kate Plus 8), an exceptional milestone.”

Kate, who changed from downtrodden housewife into glamorous reality star over the show’s run, tweeted to her 30,000 followers: “TLC cancelled it. I’m sorry. We’ve had a great run! Six years of whirlwind fun-filled adventures.
“Thanks to TLC and our many, many supportive and diehard fans! While it is very sad for me and the kids (there were many tears at the breakfast table this morning!), we are we are looking forward with great anticipation to our bright future!”
The reality show star was keen to see the positive side to what must be disappointing news.
She said: “I am excited to consider the many more invigorating opportunities that may come my way.”

50th anniversary of Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall’s construction 50 years ago must be a constant reminder to citizens today to stand up for freedom and democracy, the city’s mayor said Saturday as a united Germany commemorated the bitter anniversary.
Seeing Berlin divided by the wall tore apart the country as well as separating the city’s streets, neighbors and families, mayor Klaus Wowereit said at a televised ceremony.
“It is our shared responsibility to keep the memory alive and to pass it on to the coming generations as a reminder to stand up for freedom and democracy to ensure that such injustice may never happen again” – Wowereit said.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel (who grew up behind the wall in Germany’s communist eastern part) also attended the commemoration in Berlin, where parts of the wall and an attached surveillance tower now form a museum.
The road where the museum is located was divided in two on August 13, 1961, and some 2,000 east German residents were expelled from their houses to allow the communist authorities to secure the new border.
The country was then divided for 28 years. Hundreds of east Germans were arrested while trying to flee to democratic Western Germany and at least 136 were killed trying to cross the wall.
German President Christian Wulff said the ‘life-asphyxiating wall’ must be a reminder to appreciate and preserve the ‘openness of today’s world.’
Germany had been divided into capitalist western and communist eastern sectors after the end of World War II. At the height of tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union, the East German regime started building the wall through the capital.

So You Think You Can Dance’s winner

“So You Think You Can Dance” crowned Melanie Moore the season 8 champion Thursday night. She took the victory with 47 percent of the Top Four vote. The final two dancers were both female, which is the first time that has happened in the 8 seasons that the show has been on the air.
Emmy nominated host Cat Deeley told both Sasha and Melanie “You two are both exquisite dancers, you have both been amazing.” Sasha Mallory came up with 32 percent of the vote followed by Marko Germar with in third place and Tadd Gadduang in fourth place.
The season originally began nine weeks ago with a pool of thousands of people all competing for their shot to win the grand 250,000 dollars prize along with a sponsorship deal. What started as thousands would eventually be reduced to just 20 and then only four contestants would participate in the finals.
During the course of the season, Melanie Moore was often viewed as the frontrunner due to her consistently stellar performances regarless of who she was paired with. Sasha opened the competition with a partner that she struggled to find any sort of connection with, but once she was rid of him, she truly flourished and began to put pressure on Melanie and the rest of the contestants. In the end, it is a shame to see either of these talented women lose, and it will be intersting to see where both of their careers go from here.

George Lopez’s show canceled

George Lopez, who surrendered his TBS time slot to Conan O’Brien and then saw ratings for ‘Lopez Tonight’ slide, got a cancelation notice Wednesday.
Lopez’s Thursday show at midnight will be the final one, the cable network said in a statement.
“TBS has reached the difficult decision not to order a third season of ‘Lopez Tonight’” – the network said, adding that it was proud to have worked with the “immensely talented comedian and entertainer.”
TBS declined further comment. The decision was based not only on ratings but also the cost of the show, according to a person familiar with the production, who spoke on condition of anonymity because TBS hadn’t authorized public comment.
A call to Lopez’s representatives was not immediately returned.
The comic gave up his 11 p.m. ET time slot to make room for O’Brien, who joined TBS after leaving NBC’s “Tonight” over a time-slot dispute that ended up reinstating Jay Leno as “Tonight” host.
The plan for TBS was to have a one-two punch of late-night shows that would particularly appeal to young viewers, but the results have been unimpressive and the cancelation unsurprising – said media analyst Brad Adgate of Horizon Media.
“The only positive was a young median age” of about 32 – Adgate said, which is part of the younger adult audience favored by advertisers.

New look of Sinead O’Connor

New photos of an unrecognizable Sinead O’Connor are creating a big buzz on the Web.
The Irish singer, known for having a shaved head and for her 1990 cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” is now sporting a fuller figure, glasses and longer hair as she tours this summer.
For example, O’Connor (44) was performing as a backup singer for reggae artist Natty Wailer during the Bray Seaside Music Festival when she was photographed on Saturday.
She was dressed in all black, wearing a partly sheer top, blazer and pants with large cross around her neck.
In 1992, O’Connor made headlines for tearing up a photo of Pope John Paul II during a “Saturday Night Live” appearance to protest sexual abuse in the Catholic Church.
Her last album (“Throw Down Your Arms”) was released in 2005. O’Connor (now a mother of four) is currently on tour in Europe.

Sean Kingston after jet ski accident

After enduring a harrowing recovery from being critically injured in a jet ski crash on May 29, Sean Kingston was all smiles at the 2011 Teen Choice Awards in Universal City on Sunday.
Kingston (21) stepped out on the Gibson Amphitheatre’s red carpet for his first public appearance since the incident, clad in a bright red vest, white T-shirt, jeans, and gold jewelry.
The Jamaican-American singer recently opened up to MTV about his near-fatal accident, which occurred over Memorial Day weekend when the watercraft he was driving crashed under a small bridge, injuring him and his passenger.
“A lot of people don’t know it was a deeper situation” – the “Beautiful Girls” singer said. “I had open heart surgery and I had two other surgeries.”
Doctors had to operate on Kingston multiple times when they discovered that his aorta was torn and blood was filling his chest. But the star, who in addition suffered a broken jaw, fractured wrist, and water in his lungs, made a miraculous full recovery. “I’m 100 percent right now” – he said. “What the accident basically taught me is, in life, you have to count your blessings.”
