People’s Choice Awards 2012
The fans have voted, and in the millions: Stars of TV, film and music picked up their trophies Wednesday night at the 38th annual People’s Choice Awards.
Backstage, Emma Stone (winner of the favorite-movie-actress award) had tongue firmly in cheek when asked how she felt: “It sucked,” she joked to reporters. “This is so crappy. No, it’s so nice.” The star of The Help, wearing a green Gucci jacket and dark trousers, choked up onstage during her acceptance speech. But she recovered enough later to tell reporters her style icon. “Diane Keaton, for sure” – she said.
In fact, many stars say the People’s Choice Awards are their favorite of the awards season, which is just getting underway. Hosted by Kaley Cuoco of CBS’ The Big Bang Theory at the Nokia Theatre, the awards were handed out after a record-breaking 230-million-plus online votes at the website and via Facebook and Twitter. Faith Hill and Demi Lovato provided the musical performances.
Dressed in a red poufy dress with red spike heels, Cuoco opened the show shouting: “I’ve always loved this show because you, the fans, are in control of who wins!”
That said, Nathan Fillion, who took home the award for favorite TV drama actor for CBS’ Castle, summed up the stakes during his turn on the red carpet: Winning, he noted – “depends on the Internet savvy of your fans.” Later, during his acceptance speech, he was explicit: “To the fans, let this giant crystalized tear of victory be a symbol of your excellent taste!”
Social media got some kudos as well. “Love those Twitter fans. Keep it up, guys!” said Neil Patrick Harris, star of How I Met Your Mother, during his acceptance speech for the favorite-TV-comedy-actor award.
Katy Perry.
Maybe Katy Perry shouldn’t have skipped the 2012 People’s Choice Awards.
Wouldn’t collecting on five of seven nominations, including Favorite Female Artist, have cheered her up?! But then again, Favorite Movie Actor Johnny Depp wasn’t even there, so maybe she didn’t miss out on too much…
What Perry most certainly did miss, however, was a breezy, fun evening full of lighthearted ribbing, a parade of stars based largely on who’s got a movie or show coming out, a smattering of awards also based on who’s available to show up, and How I Met Your Mother’s first win in six tries for Favorite Network TV Comedy.
And in a non-eligible year for Twilight, there had to be something for Robert Pattinson to do, right?!
Of course! The British heartthrob—seated next to Betty White and sporting a questionable buzz cut—was on hand to accept the Favorite Drama Movie Award for the apparently somewhat-seen Water for Elephants.
The unequivocal hit Bridesmaids was named Favorite Comedy Movie. Maya Rudolph, Ellie Kemper, Wendi McClendon-Covey and director Paul Feig burst into an impromptu performance of Wilson Philips’ “Hold On” — and producer Judd Apatow did his best to keep up, but it was obvious he wasn’t as well-versed in the 1980′s classic as the rest.
“Wow!” Apatow exclaimed. “Thank you very much. I don’t know why they asked me to accept it, it’s really a lot of other people’s work. When I was doing this movie, it was so much fun doing it, but I was always saying to everyone I didn’t even care if anyone saw it. But” – he quickly added, “now that people have seen it and are giving awards for it, I’m even more thankful for the whole experience.”
Adam Sandler (winner for Favorite Comedic Movie Actor for the second straight year despite Jack and Jill) donned a suit in real life for the second time and read the heartfelt speech he had prepared for “you, the so-called people.”
For the first time, Sandler sweetly thanked his public-school teachers, including “Always Smiling Guy With the Plaid Pants” and “Mr. Gym Shorts With the Tip Hanging Out,” the latter of which got quite the laugh from Pattinson.
The lovely Emma Stone was named Favorite Movie Actress and Comedic Movie Actress, having impressed in both “The Help” and “Crazy, Stupid, Love”.
“Harry Potter” cast a spell at the People’s Choice awards on Wednesday on a night that also saw big wins for singer Katy Perry at the start of the Hollywood awards season.
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2″ – the last installment of the hit movie franchise about the British boy wizard – won four awards, including best movie and favorite ensemble cast.
Perry won five trophies, including best female music artist, favorite song for “E.T.” and favorite tour headliner. But the perky “Firework” pop star pulled out of Wednesday’s live TV ceremony at short notice, following her split with British comedian Russell Brand two weeks ago after 14 months of marriage.
The People’s Choice is the earliest of Hollywood’s glittering annual awards shows. But unlike the Oscars or the Golden Globes, the People’s Choice winners are determined by fans and provide few insights to the likely winners of the movie industry’s highest honors in February.
The “Harry Potter” stars did not make the trip from Britain to the awards show in Los Angeles so none of their wins were announced on the two-hour televised ceremony.
Female romp “Bridesmaids” won best comedy movie and Johnny Depp picked up the best actor award.
Emma Stone (23) took the trophies for both movie actress and favorite comedy actress for her roles in civil rights era film “The Help” and “Crazy, Stupid, Love.”
“I moved to LA eight years ago this week with my mom and it is so insane to be standing up here right now” – Stone told the audience.
Former Disney Channel star Demi Lovato, 19, was voted favorite pop artist following her return to showbusiness after an emotional breakdown in late 2010, beating the likes of Lady Gaga and Beyonce. Maroon 5 won best band.
Television honors included “Glee” star Lea Michele and Neil Patrick Harris for “How I Met Your Mother,” which also won favorite TV comedy show. “Two Broke Girls” was voted best new TV comedy.
