Pancake Day at IHOP

There’s nothing like free food for a good cause. For the eighth year, IHOP restaurants are offering a free stack of buttermilk pancakes today from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The popular pancake chain hopes to raise 3 million dollars in donations for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and other local charities. The charities will receive 100 hundred percent of proceeds.
In 2012, IHOP raised more than 3 million dollars for the various charities. The restaurant has raised over 10 million dollars over the past eight pancake holidays.
Pancake day is typically celebrated on “Fat Tuesday” or the last day before Lent. This year it occurs on Tuesday, February 12.

The Puppy Bowl IX – 2013

Before the battle for Super Bowl glory was decided Sunday, there already was a winner — a cuddly and feisty one, for the cutest showing of athleticism.
This year’s Puppy Bowl Bissell “Most Valuable Puppy” prize goes to the most courageous pooch on the field – Marta, a Schnauzer/Beagle mix, from the adoption organization AHeinz57 Pet Rescue & Transport. She out-hustled and out-muscled dogs twice her size to take the MVP title.
“Marta’s tiny, but she’s not delicate, and she is deceptively athletic, which kind of tricked the bigger dogs” – says Daniel Schachner, who acted as “The Ref” on the field. It was his job to call puppy penalties including whining, illegal napping (“That was a big one this year”) and excessive cuteness (“when the burly cameramen stop what they’re doing to say ‘awww,’ that’s when you know”).

Groundhog Day 2013 – Punxsutawney Phil and his shadow

Will spring come early this year?
According to folklore, the answer hinges on a groundhog and the right weather conditions on February 2.
If a groundhog emerges from its burrow and see its shadow, then six more weeks of winter weather is on the way.
But if it comes out and sees no shadow, spring is forecast to come early.
Punxsutawney, the Pennsylvania town that is home to one of the most famous weather-predicting groundhogs, Punxsutawney Phil, has been carrying on the tradition of Groundhog Day since the 1800′s – according to The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.

Rapper Rick Ross target by shooting

Hip-hop has long been marred in violence. Often the music is drenched in street tales, reflecting a tragic reality for some and entertainment for others. However when news broke on Monday that Rick Ross was the target of a drive-by shooting in Florida, things became all too real.
“I think this is a sad day for hip-hop because a lot of times we all partake in the entertainment of it, without realizing that hip-hop was always built on the foundation of realness and keeping it real” – Kim Osorio, editor in chief of The Source magazine told MTV News on Monday (Jan. 28).
Osorio is an industry veteran who has long used her editorial scope to not only dissect hip-hop music, but report on the culture as well. “There were a lot of people who had a problem with what Rick Ross was doing. Now we’re in a situation where the entertainment has become a reality. People are actually trying to hurt him and I think that’s sad for us” – she said.

SAG Awards 2013 – winners

It’s a Sunday in January, which means there’s a good chance there will be an awards show happening somewhere. Indeed, actors of both the big and small screen gathered for the 2013 Screen Actors Guild Awards on this chilly and rainy L.A. day, and, as we get closer and closer to the Oscars, the red-carpet fashion just keeps getting better.
By now – we’re familiar with the sartorial direction the top contenders are going in, and seeing them take risks, play it safe or totally surprise us with each carpet is what keeps us from going totally crazy having to work every Sunday night.
The SAG Awards carpet was all trends. With two looks in particular taking up a lot of the spotlight. The first was navy, with Female Actor in a Leading Role winner Jennifer Lawrence leading the pack in a form-fitting, strapless Dior Couture gown and Chopard jewelry. The slinky dress, which looked almost sewn onto the actress’ body, created a classic Hollywood feel, particularly because Lawrence complemented it with cascading, wavy brown hair parted deep on one side — a very Veronica Lake, classic Tinseltown look that was the second most popular trend of the night. Finishing the look with a deep oxblood lip, Jennifer is clearly gearing up for the ultra glamorous Oscars she has to come.

Victoria Azarenka wins Australian Open 2013

Victoria Azarenka had the bulk of the crowd against her. The fireworks were fizzling out, and when she looked over the net, she saw Li Na crashing to the court and almost knocking herself out.
Considering the cascading criticism she’d encountered after her previous win, Azarenka didn’t need the focus of the Australian Open final to be on another medical timeout.
So after defending her title with a 4:6, 6:4, 6:3 victory over the sixth-seeded Li in one of the most unusual finals ever at Melbourne Park, Azarenka understandably dropped her racket and cried tears of relief late Saturday night.
She heaved as she sobbed into a towel beside the court, before regaining her composure to collect the trophy.
“It isn’t easy, that’s for sure, but I knew what I had to do” – the 23-year-old Belarussian said. “I had to stay calm. I had to stay positive. I just had to deal with the things that came onto me.”
There were a lot of those things squeezed into the 2-hour-40-minute match. Li (who was playing her second Australian Open final in three years) twisted her ankle and tumbled to the court in the second and third sets.
