Dan Wheldon (who moved to the United States from his native England with hopes of winning the Indianapolis 500 and went on to twice prevail in the famed race) died Sunday after a massive, fiery wreck that involved 15 cars at the Las Vegas Indy 300.
Mr. Wheldon (33) was one of the most popular IndyCar Series drivers.
He called the Indy 500 “the biggest sporting event in the world,” and his second and final victory there came in most unexpected fashion. Trailing rookie JR Hildebrand with one turn remaining, Mr. Wheldon was resigned to finishing second for the third consecutive year.
But Hildebrand brushed the wall seconds away from what seemed like certain victory, giving Mr. Wheldon one of the luckiest breaks in Brickyard history. He crossed the line in front, making the final lap the only one he led in this year’s race.
“That’s Indianapolis” – Mr. Wheldon said a day later. “That’s why it’s the greatest spectacle in racing.
“You never know what’s going to happen.”
Such was the case again Sunday in Las Vegas.
Mr. Wheldon started last in the 34-car field for a chance to win 5 million dollars and was up to 24th quickly, but well behind the first wave of cars that got into trouble on the fateful 11th lap. He had no way to avoid the wrecks in front of him. There was no time to brake or steer out of trouble. His car sailed into the fence extending high over the track barrier. About two hours later, his death was announced.

After nearly two days of deliberation, the jury in the Joshua Komisarjevsky trial found the defendant guilty on all of the 17 counts against him. They convicted Komisarjevsky of murdering Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her two daughters, Hayley and Michaela during a 2007 home invasion. Since six of those counts are capital felonies, that same jury will now decide what Komisarjevsky’s sentence will be life in prison or the death penalty.
“They’re now about to face a task that is even more difficult than what they’ve done. They’ve just viewed horrific evidence that will haunt them for a lifetime. Now they’ll have to in effect, decide if this man will live or die” – said Norm Pattis – a criminal defense attorney with no ties to the case.
Pattis says this phase of the trial is where the defense will have to pull out all the stops and humanize Komisarjevsky in the eyes of the jury. Pattis says the defense will have a lot to work with and could even put Komisarjevsky on the stand.
“The challenge for the defense is going to be to take all of this material, look 12 ordinary people in the eye and ask how is it possible that one of us could behave in this manner, and that’s really the stress, one of us” – said Pattis.
The state will also be making its case. Former Chief State’s Attorney Chris Morano says the state has to prove aggravating factors, which show the death penalty is the right punishment for Komisarjevsky’s crimes.

‘Rush Hour’ star Chris Tucker is facing foreclosure on his 6 million dollars Central Florida home.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that the actor/comedian owes more than 4.4 million dollars to the bank, citing papers filed in Circuit Court in Lake County.
Tucker (39) purchased the 10,000-square-foot home waterfront home, on Lake Apopka in Montverde’s pricey Bella Collina community, in 2007. It has five bedrooms, three fireplaces, a personal spa, an outdoor kitchen overlooking a pool and a basement designed like a pirate ship with a wooden deck, mast and sail, according to the paper.
Court documents reportedly show that the IRS imposed an 11.5 million dollars tax lien on the home last year, in an effort to collect federal income taxes from Tucker. The Sentinel reports that documents show the actor’s monthly mortgage payment was 25,812.50 dollars.

A gunman apparently enraged over a custody dispute walked into a crowded Seal Beach hair salon where his former wife worked and opened fire, killing eight people and critically wounding another person in the deadliest shooting in Orange County history.
The attacker sprayed Salon Meritage with gunfire Wednesday afternoon as victims fell to the floor and those who could escape ran onto the street or hid in neighboring businesses in the bustling area of trendy restaurants and shops along Pacific Coast Highway, authorities and witnesses said. The gunman continued firing outside, where he shot one man who apparently tried to flee in a Range Rover.
“He just didn’t stop. Anybody he saw he was shooting” – said an Anaheim woman who was in a stylist’s chair when the gunman began firing. “It went boom, boom, boom. I was afraid he was going to shoot everybody.”
An officer saw the suspect leaving the area as police responded to reports of the gunfire. The man was arrested about half a mile away and was the sole suspect in the rampage – authorities said.
Police on Wednesday night had not released the alleged gunman’s name or the identities of the victims, nor had they established a motive. But friends and witnesses who knew the salon employees said the alleged gunman was Scott Dekraai and he appeared to be targeting his former wife, who was a stylist at Salon Meritage. They said the couple had been involved in a bitter custody dispute involving their son.
The midafternoon rampage stunned the normally placid beach community. Just one homicide had been reported in the city in the last five years – authorities said.
“A crime of this magnitude is not something Seal Beach is familiar with” – Seal Beach Police Sgt. Steve Bowles said. “This could be one of our greatest tragedies.”

First, the New York Jets demoted wide receiver Derrick Mason. Then, late Tuesday night, they traded him to the Houston Texans for a conditional seventh-round draft pick – ESPN New York reported.
The move comes after a swirl of reports that Mason was unhappy with the team’s offense.
In the latest twist for Team Drama, Mason reportedly was benched for the first half of the Jets’ game Sunday against New England because of critical comments he made after a loss on Oct. 2 to the Baltimore Ravens. Coach Rex Ryan denied that, saying he wanted to give rookie Jeremy Kerley a shot as the No. 3 receiver Sunday and suggesting the move came from a “private conversation” last week with Mason. “I had a conversation with Derrick, and the reason he didn’t play as much had absolutely nothing to do with a conversation [he had with the media]” – Ryan said. “You guys know I have an open policy with the media. I don’t put a muzzle on anybody.” In any event, Mason, who usually plays half the snaps, had one catch in six plays in the loss to the Patriots.
“Guys, let’s face it, I thought he’d catch 80 to 90 balls and that hasn’t happened” – Ryan said.
The Jets weren’t sharing details, but Rich Cimini of ESPN New York, citing unnamed sources, reports that the team thought Mason wasn’t learning the playbook quickly enough. Mason, who had played for the Baltimore Ravens and Tennessee Titans, was courted by both teams as a free agent this summer, and the Jets seemed like a good fit. But the team had cleared him to spend Mondays and Tuesdays in Nashville with his family and that contributed to the perception that he wasn’t committed. Add to the mix that Mason (37) had only 13 catches in five games and, a source told Cimini, at times Mason didn’t know the play.

Seattle’s masked superhero crime fighter ‘Phoenix Jones’ is now fighting an assault charge for allegedly spraying pepper spray on people who he claims were fighting. Seattle police claim the people were dancing.
Phoenix Jones (who has been unmasked by police as Benjamin Francis) was arrested about 2:30 a.m. Sunday while still wearing his black and gold superhero costume, a bullet-proof vest and carrying two cans of pepper spray. Jones is a member of Rain City Superhero Movement, a group of self-proclaimed superheroes who say they patrol the streets to fight crime.
He was charged with assaulting two people who police said were “dancing and having a good time” as they walked to their car.
“In this particular case, he perceived that this group was fighting and when we contacted them, they said they weren’t fighting” – said Det. Mark Jamieson, a Seattle Police Department public information officer. “Unfortunately, he used force. He committed a crime, an assault against these individuals. That’s against the law.”
The police report by Officer Hosea Crumpton said cited a woman who was sprayed saying the four victims “began dancing and frolicking with each other. Suddenly she observed a person … running full sprint towards her group.”
The person sprayed all four victims with pepper spray, the report stated.
Francis, who was being filmed by a journalist at the time, told police he “ran into the crowd to break up the fight.”
“He saw two white males fighting, but could not explain why four people, including women, had been sprayed” – the police report said.
In a video taken by a journalist who was with Jones when he was arrested and posted on Jones’ Facebook page shows Jones rushing towards commotion and a crowd in a road beneath an underpass in downtown Seattle. It is unclear from the video whether the group is fighting or just messing around, as police said.
The police report said that Francis “has had a history of injecting himself in these incidents. Recently there has been increased reports of citizens being pepper sprayed by [Francis] and his group.”

Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, observed this year from sundown on Friday night, October 7th until nightfall on October 8th, and is the Most Awesome Day in the Jewish calendar.
Concluding the “Ten Days of Repentance” – also known as the “Days of Awe,” Yom Kippur is a day where few Jews venture further than home and a house of worship. Expect that most Jews you know will forgo their usual weekend routines. Instead of holding tickets to movies or concerts Friday night, they will have tickets for seats at a Kol Nidrei Service.
Before Yom Kippur Jews seek out and reconcile with friends, colleagues, family members and even enemies. Yom Kippur is the time to forgive and move on. “If we cannot forgive others” – said the Hassidic Master Israel Ba’al Shem Tov, “how can we expect God to forgive us?”
Jewish tradition outlines three paths to help along this process of fixing our lives leading up to and during Yom Kippur.
Tzedakah (Charity). The ethical imperative to contribute our resources to support the needy, our communal organizations, and to make the world a better place.
Teshuvah (Repentance). Acknowledging our shortcomings, showing regret for what we did, and resolving to not make the same mistakes again, reconciles our relationship with God.
Tefillah (Prayer). Opening our hearts, putting thoughts into words, we pray in the plural, asking for the good of all, not for our own personal needs.
