The first official observation of President’s Day dates back to 1880 and originally commemorated George Washington’s birthday on Feb. 22. Festivities included receptions held by prominent figures and Birthnight Balls, a banquet and dance event that is still held at Gadsby’s Tavern in Alexandria, Virginia, today.
Abraham Lincoln was a fellow February baby (Feb. 12, 1809) and although his birthday was not honored as a federal holiday, many states adopted it as a legal holiday. In order to create a uniform system of federal holidays, Congress voted in 1968 to shift three existing holidays to Mondays, thereby combining Washington and Lincoln’s birthday celebrations into the third Monday in February.
Today the holiday is still officially known as Washington’s Birthday but many recognize it as a day to honor all who have served as president.

Phoenix police say they removed a gun from the home of actor Frankie Muniz after a domestic dispute with his girlfriend.
A police report says Elycia Turnbow claims Muniz pulled out a gun and held it against his head last Friday night after the two were arguing about prior relationships.
Turnbow told police that she was worried that the 25-year-old Muniz might be suicidal so she called one of his band mates to take him to a hospital.
The star of the ‘Malcom in the Middle’ TV show told police that the gun wasn’t loaded. But The Arizona Republic says police officers retrieved the gun from a downstairs closet of Muniz’s home and it was loaded.
Muniz’s publicist says the actor wasn’t arrested and wasn’t suicidal and Turnbow wasn’t assaulted.

CBS Los Angeles reporter Serene Branson is feeling fine today following a worrisome episode during last night’s Grammy telecast.
While doing a live report from the red carpet she slurred her speech. And seemed to some viewers as if she were having a stroke. Branson was cleared by paramedics. Who examined her following the broadcast saying her vital signs were normal.
A colleague drove her home as a precaution. Speculation on what happened centers on a possible transient ischemic attack (TIA) which caused her to experience aphasia, or altered speech patterns.
TIA happens when a blockage occurs in the blood supply to the brain, causing stroke-like symptoms.

Even though the nominees were all announced late last year, this Sunday night will see all nominated artists go head to head in a bid to secure the music industry’s most prestigious award. Eminem, who is a leading nominee tonight would be expected to secure at least some of the gongs in the major categories.
However he is facing stiff competition in some of these from the likes of Katy Perry and Lady Gaga to name a few. Also expected to do well tonight but facing competition is Justin Bieber. Who is nominated in both the Best Pop Vocal Album and Best New Artist category. Its in the latter that it could prove most interesting tonight given that he is up against much more contemporary artists including ‘Mumford & Sons’ and ‘Florence and the Machine’.
Also included is a tip of the hat to the late Micheal Jackson with the possibility of what may not be a final, posthumous Grammy for him in the Best Male Pop Vocal category.

On ’20/20′ Friday night, ABC brought you the dramatic story of the Kim family. They are the Bay Area parents who got lost in a blizzard in Oregon with their two young children after taking a wrong turn.
Even with the tragic death of James Kim, the family expressed gratitude for the efforts of search and rescue volunteers. Those volunteers often give up a lot of their own time to save lives.
A nighttime search and rescue training mission is proof that passion has nothing to do with pay.
“We have to practice and we train in all times of day, night, weather because that’s when we have to do our work” – said search and rescue volunteer Jackie Tubis.
Across the state some 1.000 search and rescue volunteers often hone their skills after putting in time at their day jobs.
“The people on this team range from sheet metal workers to teachers to EMTs and paramedics, to CEOs” – said search and rescue volunteer director Jeff Thomas.
Santa Clara County’s Search and Rescue Team has 56 volunteers. Retired high tech employee Jim Cole has been part of the unit for nearly two decades.
“I do it for the people. There is no pay involved in it, just flat out for the people. I love helping people” – said Cole.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and his family have arrived in the resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh in the Sinai Peninsula, Al Arabiya television and the Associated Press reported today, without saying where they got the information.
Mubarak left Cairo from a military airbase in the suburbs and was accompanied by Lieutenant General Sami Hafez Enan (chief of staff of the Egyptian Army), the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported, citing an unidentified airport official.
Egyptians today vowed to hold their biggest demonstrations so far during the crisis over the country’s leadership after Mubarak went on national television to defy calls for his immediate resignation. Mubarak (82) reiterated his intention to stay in office, while handing day-to-day powers to Vice President Omar Suleiman in a bid to placate opponents who demand an end to his 30-year rule.

The eyes of the golfing world will be on Tiger Woods from today as he tees up for this week’s Dubai Desert Classic at the Emirates Golf Club.
The former world number one has never finished outside the top five in five starts in Dubai. But, after finishing just 44th at Torrey Pines two weeks ago, the American won’t be as confident as usual standing on the first tee.
Woods is not even favourite to win this week, with that honour going to Martin Kaymer, who has a chance of taking top spot in the rankings this weekend.
The 7,301-yard Emirates course is recognised as one of the finest in the Gulf and requires players to plot their way round, employing a blend of power and accuracy. That especially applies at the par four ninth hole, which at 463-yards and with water all down the left-hand side, is tricky to say the least. Just ask Martin Kaymer. He played it in five over par last year!
