‘Basketball Wives’ new season

‘Basketball Wives’ season 3 is making waves across the world and its latest season is going to be more or at least as enticing as the second season that was very well received throughout the duration of its broadcast.
‘Basketball Wives’’ third season is going to include not just wives of prominent football players but also their girl friends and ex wives and ex girlfriends. This all mix up is certainly going to spice up things for the viewers and make it unpredictable for the football players whose current or exs are going to be part of the reality show.
Shaunie O’Neal who is an important part of the show on VH1 says that the reality show will make the whole experience of watching television and more especially reality show a much more interesting things for one and all.
While talking to ESPN she said: “Along with our normal drama you’ll get to dip into the ladies personal lives a little more… More kids, you’ll get to meet some of the ladies parents and hear their story a little more. It becomes a little more personal this season.”
She went on to add: “It was important to me, because we have kids, that we stay cool… We don’t have to be BFF. We don’t have to talk every day or anything like that, but we’re parents first and it’s important that we stay good.”

Facts about Memorial Day 2011

The kinship Peter Puhalla shares with the late uncle he never knew runs deeper than family – a connection born of blood certainly but in a very real sense nurtured there, too.
In blood and in sacrifice.
Frank A. Puhalla was a 23-year-old Army private, a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division serving in World War II, when he was killed in action in North Africa on September 17, 1943, four years before his nephew’s birth.
Last week, as Mister Puhalla and other volunteers from Throop American Legion Herbert Clark Post 180 placed fresh American flags on the graves of 488 veterans at four cemeteries in the borough, the 64-year-old Air Force veteran paused at his uncle’s marker and reflected on ties that bind them all.
“Even though I never met him, I feel that I knew him” – said Mr. Puhalla, the Post 180 commander who spent 12 months in Vietnam from 1967 into 1968. “Once a veteran, always a veteran. You can ask anyone. Once you serve, that’s it – you’re brothers.”
Today (on Memorial Day) Northeast Pennsylvania will honor those who have died in service to the nation with parades and solemn services, with patriotic music and quiet moments of reflection in cemeteries where soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines lie in graves adorned with crisp flags.
But on the day set aside for all Americans to remember the fallen, the inescapable fact is living veterans – almost invariably and probably naturally – are the ones who have voluntarily taken on the task of keeping alive the memory of the dead locally.

Rap musician Gil Scott-Heron dies

New York — Musician Gil Scott-Heron, who helped lay the groundwork for rap by fusing minimalistic percussion, political expression and spoken-word poetry on songs such as ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,’ died Friday at age 62.
A friend, Doris C. Nolan, who answered the telephone listed for his Manhattan recording company, said he died in the afternoon at St. Luke’s Hospital after becoming sick upon returning from a European trip.
“We’re all sort of shattered” – she said.
Scott-Heron’s influence on rap was such that he sometimes was referred to as the Godfather of Rap, a title he rejected.
“If there was any individual initiative that I was responsible for it might have been that there was music in certain poems of mine, with complete progression and repeating `hooks,’ which made them more like songs than just recitations with percussion” – he wrote in the introduction to his 1990 collection of poems, “Now and Then.”
He referred to his signature mix of percussion, politics and performed poetry as bluesology or Third World music. But then he said it was simply ‘black music or black American music.’
“Because Black Americans are now a tremendously diverse essence of all the places we’ve come from and the music and rhythms we brought with us” – he wrote.
Nevertheless, his influence on generations of rappers has been demonstrated through sampling of his recordings by artists, including Kanye West.

Memorial Day 2011

Never mind what the calendar indicates, for Americans, summer begins with the Memorial Day weekend.
And from all indications, Americans are ready to break out after almost two years of recession and clipped wings. AAA forecasts almost 35 million will travel at least 50 miles from home over the holiday weekend.
And that’s a slight increase of 0,2 percent over last year, despite gas prices that are 1 dollar more per gallon than last year.
The tug to get away is universal — who doesn’t like to explore new places, feel sand between their toes?
It’s important to remember, however, that while the road is alluring, it can also be dangerous. The National Safety Council estimates that 406 people who left on a holiday won’t make it home alive.
This year, especially, will require defensive driving. There’s a lot of high water along the Mississippi. Also, as the events of Joplin and Tuscaloosa point out, travelers need to pay close attention to the weather along their way.
Louisiana State Police will be out in full force patrolling the roadways to ensure that everyone is driving with due care and offering assistance to motorists in need. Troopers will focus much of their attention on aggressive drivers, speeders, impaired drivers, and those who do not wear their seat belts or properly restrain children. Last year, 59 percent of all Louisiana residents killed in a crash were not properly restrained. State police warn there is a trend of increased alcohol consumption during holiday weekends, and too many impaired drivers.

Severe weather in Louisville

Louisville, Ky. – With the possibility of severe weather in the Louisville area, local leaders are on high alert.
Mayor Greg Fischer met with his MetroSafe team. Including director Doug Hamilton.
While they said they are hoping the weather threat does not bring a devastating tornado strike to the area, there’s certainly been precedent for it in recent days.
‘We certainly don’t want to be portrayed as saying the sky is falling. But we want to raise the awareness level for everybody for what has been happening across the country. When you see pictures of devastation from Tuscaloosa; Joplin, Missouri and most recently in Oklahoma City, we would be silly not to raise the awareness level of everybody in the community as to what could happen with these tornadoes’ – Fischer said.
National Weather Services offices serving Kentucky have issued several watches. More watches and warnings are expected as the system moves into the area and is capable of producing severe thunderstorms with large hail, high winds and tornadoes. Kentucky has now been placed in the high-risk category, indicating the level of threat has increased as the system moves west.
Fischer urged people to consider purchasing weather radios and to sign up for text alerts from television stations and the National Weather Service. The mayor went on to say that the city is purchasing technology that allows alerts and emails, but the system is not yet in place.
Fischer said outdoor tornado sirens are not meant to be heard indoors.

Bob Dylan turns 70

When Bob Dylan was 19, he wanted to sound like he was 70.
Today, he reaches that milestone without it seeming like a millstone.
To ongoing generations, he still stands as a world-worn wellspring of wit, wisdom, whimsy and wonder. Just like the folk-blues masters he admired so deeply and emulated so earnestly while searching for his own musical, spiritual, emotional and very-human voice.
Dylan (one of the most transformative, controversial and iconic cultural and creative forces of the American 20th century) remains an active and vital post-millennial artist and musical voice.
Nobody in American popular music has produced as much high-quality original material over such an extended period of time. Not even close.
He is one of the most exhaustively examined cultural figures ever. As musician, enfant terrible, artist, filmmaker, author, radio host, pitchman, alleged proselytizer, devoted musicologist, visionary, spiritual muse, family man, bad boy, ’60s ‘protest’ singer, recluse and seemingly tireless traveler.
He’s not done yet. This year, he signed a multi-book publishing contract. He’s still on the road.
That’s why Dylan’s 70th birthday is being treated as a cultural event, not a private occasion, which he’d probably prefer.

Iceland closed main airport after a volcano eruption

Iceland closed its main international airport on Sunday after a volcano eruption that sent a plume of ash and smoke high into the air.
Iceland’s airport and air traffic control operator Isavia said that Keflavik airport was closed to all inbound and outbound traffic at 8:30 a.m. local time.
“The ash is covering all of Iceland” – Isavia spokeswoman Hjordis Gudmundsdottir said.
The Grimsvotn volcano in Iceland’s most active Vatnajokull glacier started to erupt in the late hours of Saturday.
The volcano showed clear signs of ‘volcanic unrest’ at around 18:00 GMT on Saturday, with Icelandic media quoting geologist Hjorleifur Sveinbjornsson as saying the eruption was imminent. Plumes of ash and smoke were seen rising from the crater an hour later. The volcanic cloud reached the height of 20,000 meters.
The eruption on the Eyjafjallajokull Glacier in Iceland, which began on April 14, 2010, paralyzed air traffic throughout central and northern Europe, leaving thousands of travelers stranded and forcing more than 20 European countries to close their airspace.
The Vatnajokull area is the most active volcano location in Iceland. Since records began in 1920, it has erupted nine times, the previous eruption recorded in 2004. Most of them lasted at least one week, but the 2004 eruption took only four days.
